How to use bladder support products: Liners, pads & shields explained

Bladder leaks are far more common than people realise, yet they’re still rarely talked about. Whether it’s a small leak when you laugh, a sudden urge to urinate, or you’d like a little extra protection overnight, having the right products can make all the difference to your comfort and confidence.

We’ve created a new bladder care range designed with your body and the planet in mind. Our products are made with organic materials, significantly less plastic than conventional alternatives, and are completely free from fragrances, chemical dyes and bleaches.

Understanding bladder leaks

Bladder leaks can happen for many reasons, including:

  • Pregnancy and postpartum recovery

  • Hormonal changes during menopause

  • Pelvic floor health

  • A result of exercise or movement

  • Age-related changes

  • Prostate-related changes

  • Medical conditions

Our bladder support products are designed to absorb quickly, lock away moisture and remain breathable while being gentle on sensitive skin. They even have a 3D charcoal core for odour protection so you can have complete peace of mind whilst you focus on your day.

Choosing the right bladder support products

Everyone experiences bladder leaks differently, so choosing the right product depends on your level of protection and body type.

For light leaks

If you experience small leaks when coughing, laughing, sneezing or exercising, a light liner can provide discreet protection.

These liners are:

  • Slim and comfortable

  • Easy to wear with everyday underwear

  • Designed for quick absorption of small leaks

They’re ideal for occasional bladder leaks or light daily support.

For moderate leaks and stronger protection

For more frequent leaks, bladder pads offer additional absorbency and coverage.

Moderate and plus protection pads:

  • Absorb more liquid than liners

  • Stay securely in place

  • Help lock away moisture quickly

They provide reliable protection throughout the day while remaining comfortable and discreet.

Bladder shields

Bladder leaks affect many men too, particularly due to prostate changes, aging or certain medical conditions.

Our bladder shields are designed specifically for the male anatomy, offering targeted protection where it’s needed most.

Male shields are:

  • Shaped with a pouch front to fit the male body

  • Discreet and comfortable inside underwear

  • Designed to absorb light leaks quickly

  • Secure and breathable for everyday wear

They provide an easy, low-profile way for men to manage light bladder leaks confidently. We carry shields from light to plus protection.

How to use female bladder protection products

Using bladder liners or pads is simple, but following the right steps can help ensure maximum comfort and protection.

Step 1: Wash your hands

Before handling any hygiene product, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This helps maintain hygiene and keeps the product clean before use.

Step 2: Remove the product from its packaging

Unwrap the liner or pad from its packaging. Our wrappers are compostable, so you can dispose of these via your compost, rather than placing it in a general waste bin.

Try to avoid touching the absorbent surface if possible.

Step 3: Peel off the backing strip

Our liners and pads have an adhesive strip on the underside.

Peel away the backing paper to reveal the adhesive that will hold the product securely in your underwear.

Step 4: Place it inside your underwear

Position the liner or pad in the centre of your underwear with the absorbent side facing up.

For the best fit:

  • Place it where leaks usually occur

  • Smooth it down so the adhesive sticks properly

  • Ensure the pad sits flat without folding

This helps prevent movement, keeping you and the product comfortable throughout the day.

Step 5: Adjust for comfort

Pull your underwear up and check that the product feels secure and comfortable.

Bladder support products should feel discreet and barely noticeable when worn correctly.

Step 6: Change regularly

To stay comfortable and maintain hygiene, bladder products should be changed regularly.

A general guideline:

  • Light liners: every 3-4 hours or as needed

  • Moderate pads: every 4-6 hours

  • Heavier protection: as soon as it feels saturated

Changing regularly helps keep skin dry and prevents irritation. Keep in mind that these are a guide, if your liner, pad or shield feels saturated before these guide times, that is totally normal and you should change your product.

How to use male bladder shields

Bladder shields are designed slightly differently to ensure the right placement and protection but the general use is the same as pads and liners, including advice on when to change and how to dispose of our bladder care products.

How to dispose of bladder care products

After use, remove the liner, pad or shield and wrap it in toilet paper or the wrapper of your next product if you need to transport it elsewhere. You can then dispose of the product via the general waste bin, and the wrapper in your compost.

Bladder care products should never be flushed down the toilet, as they can block pipes and harm the environment.

Our bladder products are made with significantly less plastic than traditional alternatives, helping reduce waste.

Tips for staying comfortable with bladder leaks

Alongside using bladder support products, a few daily habits can help support bladder health.

Wear breathable underwear

Cotton and natural fabrics allow airflow and help reduce irritation. These materials work well with organic bladder care products.

Strengthen your pelvic floor

Pelvic floor exercises (often called Kegels) can help improve bladder control over time. Regular practice may help reduce leaks.

Stay hydrated

Though you may be tempted to do the opposite, drinking enough water supports bladder health. Dehydration can concentrate urine and irritate the bladder.

Choose skin-friendly products

Many conventional bladder products contain fragrances, synthetics and chemical treatments that may irritate sensitive skin.

Grace & Green bladder support products are:

  • Made with organic materials

  • Free from fragrances

  • Free from chemical dyes and bleaches

This makes them a gentler choice for both your body and the environment.

By choosing the right level of support and using your bladder care products correctly, you can stay comfortable, confident and protected every day.
